Complete IMAP Settings Guide for Popular Email Clients

Gmail IMAP Settings

Gmail requires an App Password for third-party applications. Use these IMAP settings to connect Gmail with any application.

Important: Gmail requires 2-Step Verification and App Password for IMAP access. Regular password authentication is no longer supported.

How to Generate Gmail App Password

  1. Go to your Google Account settings (myaccount.google.com)
  2. Navigate to Security section
  3. Enable 2-Step Verification if not already enabled
  4. Under "2-Step Verification", click on App passwords
  5. Select app: Mail and device: Other (Custom name)
  6. Enter a name for your application (e.g., "Email Migration Tool")
  7. Click Generate and copy the 16-character password
  8. Use this App Password instead of your regular Gmail password in applications

Enable IMAP in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail and click the Settings gear icon
  2. Go to See all settings
  3. Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
  4. Under "IMAP access", select Enable IMAP
  5. Click Save Changes

G Suite (Google Workspace) IMAP Settings

G Suite (now Google Workspace) uses the same IMAP settings as Gmail but requires App Passwords for third-party applications. These settings work for all Google Workspace business accounts.

Important: G Suite/Google Workspace accounts require 2-Step Verification and App Password for IMAP access. Contact your Google Workspace administrator if you need help enabling IMAP.

How to Generate G Suite App Password

  1. Go to your Google Account settings (myaccount.google.com)
  2. Navigate to Security section
  3. Enable 2-Step Verification if not already enabled (may require admin approval)
  4. Under "2-Step Verification", click on App passwords
  5. Select app: Mail and device: Other (Custom name)

Additional Notes for G Suite

  • Admin Control: Your Google Workspace administrator may have disabled IMAP access. Contact them if IMAP is not available.
  • Security Policies: Some organizations have security policies that restrict IMAP access. Check with your IT department.
  • Same Settings as Gmail: G Suite uses the same IMAP servers as Gmail (imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com).
  • OAuth2 Support: Some applications support OAuth2 authentication which is more secure than App Passwords.

Outlook/Hotmail IMAP Settings

Microsoft Outlook (Hotmail, Live, MSN) requires App Password for IMAP access when using two-factor authentication.

Note: If you have 2FA enabled, you must generate an App Password. Otherwise, use your regular Microsoft account password.

How to Generate Outlook App Password

  1. Go to Microsoft Account Security (account.microsoft.com/security)
  2. Sign in with your Outlook/Hotmail account
  3. Under "Advanced security options", click App passwords
  4. Click Create a new app password
  5. Enter a name for your application
  6. Click Generate and copy the password
  7. Use this App Password in your email application

Hotmail IMAP Settings

Hotmail (now part of Outlook.com) supports IMAP access. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you'll need to generate an App Password.

Note: Hotmail accounts migrated to Outlook.com use the same settings. If you have 2FA enabled, you must generate an App Password.

How to Enable IMAP in Hotmail

  1. Log in to your Hotmail/Outlook.com account
  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the top right
  3. Go to View all Outlook settings
  4. Navigate to Mail โ†’ Sync email
  5. Enable IMAP access
  6. Click Save

How to Generate Hotmail App Password

Office 365 IMAP Settings

Microsoft Office 365 (Microsoft 365) business and enterprise accounts support IMAP access. Modern authentication may require App Passwords for third-party applications.

Important: Office 365 accounts with Modern Authentication enabled require App Passwords for IMAP access. Check with your IT administrator if you're using a business account.

How to Enable IMAP in Office 365

  1. Log in to your Office 365 account via Outlook Web App (outlook.office.com)
  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the top right
  3. Go to View all Outlook settings
  4. Navigate to Mail โ†’ Sync email
  5. Ensure IMAP is enabled
  6. Click Save

How to Generate Office 365 App Password

Additional Notes for Office 365

  • Business Accounts: Some organizations may have IMAP disabled by IT policy. Contact your administrator if IMAP access is not available.
  • Modern Authentication: Office 365 uses Modern Authentication (OAuth2) by default. For third-party apps that don't support OAuth2, use App Passwords.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): If MFA is enabled, App Passwords are mandatory for IMAP access.
  • Exchange Online: Office 365 uses Exchange Online. IMAP settings are the same across all Office 365 plans.
  • Connection Limits: Office 365 may have connection rate limits. If you experience connection issues, wait a few minutes and try again.

Yahoo Mail IMAP Settings

Yahoo Mail requires an App Password for IMAP access. Regular password authentication is not supported for third-party applications.

Important: Yahoo Mail requires App Password for all IMAP connections. You cannot use your regular Yahoo password.

How to Generate Yahoo App Password

  1. Go to Yahoo Account Security (login.yahoo.com/account/security)
  2. Sign in to your Yahoo account
  3. Scroll down to "App passwords" section
  4. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords
  5. Select your app or choose "Other app"
  6. Enter a custom name for your application
  7. Click Generate
  8. Copy the generated password (it will be shown only once)
  9. Use this App Password instead of your regular Yahoo password

AT&T Mail IMAP Settings

AT&T Mail (formerly AT&T Yahoo Mail) supports IMAP access for accessing your emails through email clients and applications.

How to Enable IMAP in AT&T Mail

  1. Log in to your AT&T Mail account
  2. Go to Settings or Mail Options
  3. Navigate to POP/IMAP or Email Client Settings
  4. Enable IMAP Access

Additional Notes for AT&T Mail

iCloud Mail IMAP Settings

iCloud Mail requires an App-Specific Password for IMAP access when two-factor authentication is enabled.

Note: If you have 2FA enabled on your Apple ID, you must generate an App-Specific Password. Otherwise, use your Apple ID password.

How to Generate iCloud App-Specific Password

  1. Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in
  2. Under "Security" section, find "App-Specific Passwords"
  3. Click Generate Password
  4. Enter a label for your application (e.g., "Email Client")
  5. Click Create
  6. Copy the generated password (it will be shown only once)
  7. Use this password in your email application

Enable IMAP in iCloud Mail

  1. Go to icloud.com and sign in
  2. Open Mail
  3. Click the Settings gear icon
  4. Go to Preferences โ†’ Accounts
  5. Ensure IMAP is enabled (usually enabled by default)

ProtonMail IMAP Settings

ProtonMail offers IMAP/SMTP access through ProtonMail Bridge, a desktop application that enables IMAP/SMTP support.

Important: ProtonMail requires ProtonMail Bridge application for IMAP/SMTP access. Direct IMAP connection is not available.

How to Set Up ProtonMail Bridge

  1. Download and install ProtonMail Bridge from proton.me/bridge
  2. Launch ProtonMail Bridge and sign in with your ProtonMail account
  3. Bridge will generate IMAP/SMTP credentials
  4. Use these credentials in your email application
  5. Bridge runs locally on your computer and acts as a proxy
